Charting the Course
MASC's Premier Training Program

A strong and effective school committee starts with well-informed members who understand their roles and the challenges facing public education today.

Charting the Course is MASC’s premier training program, developed by the MASC Academy for School Leadership, to equip new, aspiring, or even veteran school committee members with the knowledge and skills they need to lead effectively. This program introduces participants to the Eight Key Components of School Leadership and provides members with critical updates on evolving policies, laws, and best practices.

Per state law, all newly elected or appointed school committee members are required to complete this training within one year of their election or appointment. The program consists of at least eight hours of instruction covering essential governance topics, including school finance, open meeting law, public records law, conflict of interest law, special education law, collective bargaining, school leadership standards and evaluations, and school committee roles and responsibilities.

To ensure the depth and quality of information presented, Charting the Course is only offered in person. MASC does not provide a virtual training option, as the interactive nature of the program is essential for effectively conveying the material and engaging participants. MASC schedules Charting the Course training across the Commonwealth throughout the year to make it easier for members to attend a session that fits their location and schedule.
